Black Bastard

Black Bastard is an unstable Capsicum chinense selection developed by Bryan Townshend. It carries nearly black pods on plants with dark purple foliage.

About 20 times a Capsi Jalapeño (25,086 SHU typical).

Flavor

Earthy, sweet, and fruity with a sharp heat.

About

Pods start black and remain virtually black or take on a slight red hue when fully ripe. Flesh inside is orange or red. Skin is wrinkled and pods measure roughly 4–6 cm. Plants reach 4–5 feet and produce dark purple leaves and stems. Flavor is earthy, sweet, and fruity. The line is still segregating and is grown for both heat and ornamental value.

Backstory

Bryan Townshend of Towns-End Chili & Spice in Florida selected the Black Bastard phenotype around 2019 while following a 7JPN line. He has noted possible influence from a Roxa Lantern hybrid. Seed of the line was released while the plants remained unstable.
