Zebrange

Sweet and fruity with tropical notes, citrus, and hints of peach or berry; clean aromatic baccatum character and crisp texture.

Zebrange is a Capsicum baccatum hybrid bred in Belgium by Laurent Minet. The pods are small-to-medium (typically 4–7 cm), three-lobed or curved bell-shaped, starting green and ripening to a vivid orange or pale yellow base overlaid with striking vertical red stripes that give the variety its name. Heat is mild (commonly estimated 5 000–15 000 SHU) and concentrated near the placenta, while the flavor is bright, sweet and fruity with tropical and citrus notes and a clean baccatum aroma. Plants are vigorous and productive, often reaching 1–1.8 m and benefiting from support; they require a long warm season to develop full color and striping. The combination of ornamental appeal and approachable heat makes it popular for fresh eating, pickling, stuffing and mild sauces.

Developed by Belgian breeder Laurent Minet at the Centre Technique Horticole (CTH) in Gembloux as a deliberate cross between Aji Fantasy and Christmas Bell (Bishop’s Crown). Stabilized through successive generations with input from collectors, reaching F8 by 2023; prized for its distinctive red-striped orange pods.
