About

Ripe pods finish chocolate-brown with a slight sheen on a contorted, wrinkled body. Most fruits run about 4 to 8 cm. The flavor is earthy and a little smoky, with a short sweet note before a sharp superhot burn. It works in barbecue sauces, pastes, rubs, and powders. Plants need full sun and a long warm season. Packets still warn that the chocolate color can throw other shades.

Backstory

The Tiberius Mauler line turned up in Brian Hamilton's Pomfret, Connecticut garden in 2019, from seed he had from Justin White of White Hot Peppers. Hamilton kept selecting for a clearer scorpion shape and named the pepper after a Guild Wars character, in memory of a friend who died at 42. Chocolate pods were later picked off the caramel color and sold as their own unstable selection.
