About

Thor’s Thunderbolt is a Capsicum chinense hybrid from North Queensland, Australia, selected for both heat and a showy ripening display. Plants carry dark, often purple-tinged foliage and produce thin-walled, wrinkled pods in an irregular jagged shape that growers compare to a lightning bolt. Fruit start deep purple, pass through pink, and finish peach to cream, sometimes with a lingering purple blush. Flavor is fruity and floral in the chinense style, with a light sweetness some tasters liken to a milder ghost pepper; heat is immediate and intense but generally sits below a classic Bhut Jolokia. Specialty catalogs rate it about 300,000–500,000 Scoville Heat Units. It is used in hot sauces, salsas, pickles, and powders, and is as often grown as an ornamental as for the kitchen.

Backstory

Rebecca Johnston and Trevor Griffiths of Chilli Seedz bred this hybrid in North Queensland, with the shop based around Townsville. It was named for the jagged, lightning-like pods; some Australian listings credit chile personality Ross Barber with the name. Seed circulated as an F5–F6 line around 2020–2021. The breeders never published the parents. A 2021 grower who bought F6 seed from them described a peach variety crossed with Pimenta de Neyde, and some U.S. sellers group the name with Bhut × Neyde selections, but that pedigree is unconfirmed. After Rebecca died the original shop closed; specialty catalogs still offer the variety, often calling it only semi-stable.
