About
Peppa Peach Stripey is a striped selection of Peppapeach (also sold as Peachadew), the round Sugar Rush Peach off-type found by Welsh grower Chris Fowler around 2012–2013. U.S. grower Matt Layton noticed red striping on isolated Peppapeach plants in 2021 and, with fellow selector Rich Blood (Pepper Guru), spent several seasons stacking that trait. Ripe pods are pumpkin- to block-shaped, typically 3–8 cm, with thick walls and a peach ground color broken by red stripes or flecks; the line is not fully stable, so some fruits stay solid peach and others finish red. Heat is mild—catalogs estimate about 1,000 SHU, with a published range up to 5,000—and the flavor is sweet, tropical-citrus, and apple-like. Plants are vigorous baccatums that can reach 1–2.4 m and need staking; stripes often appear late, so an early indoor start helps. Fresh eating, stuffing, salsa, pickling, and powder are the usual kitchen uses.
Backstory
In 2021 U.S. grower Matt Layton found red striping on isolated Peppapeach plants grown from Refining Fire Chiles seed. Peppapeach (also called Peachadew) is Chris Fowler’s round off-type of Sugar Rush Peach, spotted in Wales around 2012–2013. Layton and Rich Blood of Pepper Guru selected the stripe for several seasons; Towns-End Chili & Spice later distributed Matt’s F6 line. The stripe is a latent mutation also seen in related Sugar Rush selections. The line is still not fully stable.
