About
Ripe pods are about 1 to 1.5 cm across, glossy, and slightly flattened, with thin walls. They start deep purple, almost black, then wash to peach or salmon. Heat is hot, with the sweet aromatic lift common to Brazilian chinense types. Plants stay compact, about 60 to 90 cm, and load up with fruit in a long warm season. In the kitchen the pods go into sauces, pickles, infused oil, and meat, rice, and bean dishes of the north. Some Brazilian lots finish yellow or red instead of peach.
Backstory
The name is Portuguese for eye of the mutum, a curassow of the Amazon forest. In Roraima the type shows up in Boa Vista markets and along the Rio Branco as one of several local chinense forms kept by small farmers and indigenous households. No breeder release or named cross is on record.
