About
Pods are long and smooth with rounded shoulders and a pointed tip. They start green and finish a clear orange. Las Cruces trials recorded plants about 95 cm tall and fruit about 19 cm by 3.6 cm, 50 g. Heat is mild. Flavor is the usual New Mexican chile taste with a light sweetness. Use them fresh for stuffing, grilling, or salads, or dry them.
Backstory
NMSU released NuMex Sunset in 1988 after New Mexico growers asked for ristra chiles that were not red. Paul Bosland, Jaime Iglesias, and Steve Tanksley selected the orange line so pods would dry without rotting, the same requirement as the red ristras hung by front doors. Seed is open-pollinated.
