NuMex Primavera is an open-pollinated jalapeño released by New Mexico State University in 1998. It keeps the usual jalapeño look and grassy flavor on a compact, heavy-yielding plant, with a gentler kick than a grocery jalapeño.

About
Pods ripen from dark green to red, about 5 to 7.5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide, with rounded shoulders, a semi-pointed tip, and little corking. Walls are medium, so the fruit stuffs, pickles, roasts, or slices cleanly. Heat sits in the medium band, well below a typical hot jalapeño. Official field plants ran about 42 cm tall and 38 cm wide. Garden plants often reach 60 to 90 cm.
Backstory
Paul W. Bosland and Eric J. Votava released the cultivar at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces in 1998. Processors wanted jalapeño flavor without industry-standard heat, so the program selected for easy calyx detachment, dark green color without purple blush, multiple locules, and smooth skin. The line is open-pollinated. Bosland received a 1999 Ig Nobel Prize after magazines called it a jalapeño with the flavor and none of the fire. Program lab figures are mild, not zero.
