Culinary
About
Fruit averages about 9.5 cm long and 3.6 cm wide with thick, juicy walls. Many pods pick up corking as they swell. Green fruit taste like a familiar jalapeño. Ripe red fruit add a clear sweetness and stay crunchy. Heat is medium for a jalapeño. Plants reach about 80 to 90 cm in a hot, dry climate and set heavy yields. The size makes them easy to hollow for poppers, and they also roast, pickle, and chop into salsa well.
Backstory
Paul W. Bosland and the NMSU chile program released NuMex Jalmundo in 2010 after trials at the Leyendecker Plant Science Research Center near Las Cruces. The name joins jalapeño with mundo, the Spanish word for world, as a joke about the oversized pods. Seed has been sold through the Chile Pepper Institute since the release.
