About
NuMex Heritage 6-4 is an open-pollinated Capsicum annuum cultivar released by the New Mexico Chile Pepper Breeding and Genetics Program. It was developed through rehabilitation of the historic 'New Mexico 6-4' using preserved germplasm from the 1960s. Selections focused on restoring and enhancing yield (up to 32% higher than the original), pod uniformity, easy destemming, and especially flavor—analysis showed over six times more volatile compounds than standard varieties while preserving the beloved traditional New Mexican green chile taste. Plants feature strong single main stems and uniform branching for excellent fruit set and sunscald protection. Pods are 15-20 cm long with smooth, thick flesh, maturing from green to red. Heat level is mild and consistent at approximately 1,500 SHU.
Backstory
The original New Mexico 6-4, prized for its flavor in New Mexican cuisine, had deteriorated over decades due to genetic drift and contamination. In the late 1990s/early 2000s, Dr. Paul Bosland's team obtained a seed sample from the National Center for Genetic Resources Preservation, increased it, and conducted multi-year selections from thousands of plants at the Leyendecker Center south of Las Cruces. The best line (04C377) was chosen for release around 2008-2012 as 'NuMex Heritage 6-4' to restore the variety's quality, boost productivity for growers, and deliver authentic flavor for consumers and processors.
