About
Pods hang long and thin, about 2 to 6 cm, with wrinkled skin and a thin wall. They start green and finish pale yellow, deep yellow, or red depending on the local line. The flavor is citrus and fruit with a floral chinense aroma. Heat is hot and lands on the front of the tongue. In the Amazon the fruit goes into tucupi and tacacá, vinegar or oil pickles, fish stews, and a dried powder called jiquitaia. Plants run 60 to 150 cm in warm full sun and set fruit in about three months from transplant.
Backstory
River communities and indigenous growers in Amazonas, Pará, and Roraima have kept this type for generations. INPA holds landraces collected across the Brazilian, Peruvian, and Colombian Amazon. Embrapa Hortaliças later began selecting lines from that pool for fresh market and processing, but the name Murupi still points to the place-kept morphotype.
