Medusa Pepper

Sweet, pleasant flavor with notes of bell pepper and virtually no perceptible heat; fruits are mild enough for direct consumption by children and those sensitive to spice.

Medusa peppers are a distinctive ornamental cultivar of Capsicum annuum developed for their striking visual impact. The plants are naturally dwarf and well-branched with dark green foliage, producing 40 to 50 upright, narrow, twisted fruits per plant that resemble the serpentine locks of the mythological Medusa. Fruits measure approximately 5-6 cm long and transition through ivory, yellow, and orange hues before maturing to bright red, often showing the full color spectrum on a single plant at once. Unlike most ornamental peppers, Medusa fruits are non-pungent to very mildly hot (1-1,000 SHU) and possess a sweet, pleasant flavor, rendering them both decorative and edible. Ideal for pots, balconies, and small spaces due to their compact 15-20 cm height and heat tolerance.

The Medusa pepper was developed in the United States in the late 1990s by plant breeder Marlin Edwards working with PanAmerican Seed (a division of Ball Horticultural Company). It was created by introducing non-pungency genes from sweet bell pepper cultivars into ornamental pepper breeding lines through traditional crossing and selection. The goal was a compact, high-yielding ornamental with twisted upright fruits and child-safe mildness. The variety received U.S. Plant Variety Protection (PVP200000140) with application filed January 21, 2000, and was commercially released in the early 2000s for the ornamental plant market.
