About
Malawi Sundew is a prolific traditional Malawian piquanté pepper and an old African heirloom variety. It produces small, sweet peppers with a mild kick of heat that taste almost exactly like the famous Peppadew piquanté peppers. The fruits are small and cherry tomato-like or round-oval in shape, maturing from light green or dark green through orange to red. Plants are vigorous, growing tall (over 4-6 feet) and highly productive, though they may require support as they become vine-like. Excellent for pickling—especially with a touch of extra sugar to enhance the piquant flavor—and for stuffing with cream cheese or other fillings. A rare find for home gardeners seeking authentic African heirloom flavors.
Backstory
An old family heirloom staple from a farm in the Lilongwe district of Malawi. Seeds were gifted by migrant laborer Gilbert, who brought them from his father's farm. Originally grown and sold as 'Malawi Pepperdew' but renamed 'Malawi Sundew' after trademark concerns with Peppadew International. Gilbert also brought a second variety, Malawi Paprika.
