Ripe pods are bright red and elongated, with wrinkled skin, a green calyx, and a sharp tail vendors call a stinger. Split open they smell sweet and a little like a ripe habanero, with a faint floral note on the bite. Texas Hot Peppers lists heat around habanero level and says this phenotype runs hotter than the original Misery Sweet. Growers put it in stews, chili, and cooked sauce. Saved seed may not come true.

Backstory

Khang Starr selected the Misery Sweet line in North Texas in the mid-2010s. A later off-type with tails showed up as the plants drifted, and shops began selling that tailed, slightly hotter phenotype as Misery Sweet X. The X name is a catalog label, not a separate named release from the breeder.
