About

The King of the North Pepper is an open-pollinated heirloom sweet bell pepper (Capsicum annuum) bred for performance in northern climates. It produces high yields of large, blocky, thick-walled fruits typically 6 inches long by 4 inches wide with 3 to 4 lobes. Peppers ripen from glossy dark green to a deep, vibrant red and offer a crisp texture and full sweet flavor with zero heat. Plants are sturdy and productive even in cooler temperatures and shorter seasons, continuing to set fruit until frost. Excellent all-purpose bell for home gardens, market growers in the north, and anyone seeking dependable sweet peppers without the challenges of heat-loving varieties.

Backstory

Classic American heirloom introduced around 1934. Developed in Wisconsin specifically to provide northern gardeners with a reliable sweet bell pepper that performs well in cool summers and short growing seasons where standard varieties often fail to ripen. Preserved through seed saving networks and still favored by growers in New England, Midwest, and similar climates. Associated with USDA accession PI 592825.
