About
An heirloom from Calabria in southern Italy, Joe's Long Cayenne traveled to North America through Italian-Canadian seed-saving circles in Toronto before reaching Joe Sestito in Troy, New York. Dr. Carolyn Male introduced it to Seed Savers Exchange members in 1996, helping preserve and distribute this unique strain. Plants yield abundant crops of very long (often 25–30+ cm), thin-walled, tapered red peppers that ripen from green. The thin flesh dries quickly and easily, making it ideal for homemade cayenne powder, pepper flakes, and traditional ristras. Heat levels typically range 30,000–50,000 SHU with a clean, bright profile and subtle sweetness when fully mature—suitable for both fresh culinary applications and preservation. Tall, productive plants (60–90 cm) thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, performing well in gardens or large containers.
