About

Dream Catcher Pepper is a modern ornamental chile grown as much for its foliage as for its fruit. Leaves are mottled in deep purple, green, and cream, and the contrast sharpens in full sun. Compact plants stay roughly 30–60 cm tall, which makes them a natural fit for containers, borders, and patio pots. Purple flowers give way to slender upright cones that start lavender or purple, then pass through yellow and orange before finishing red. Pods are usually 3–8 cm long with thin walls. Catalogs most often place the heat at 30,000–50,000 Scoville — cayenne territory — with fruit notes and a mild sweetness rather than the harsh bitterness some ornamentals have. Growers use the ripe red pods in salsa, chili oil, garnishes, and powder. Start seed indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost; germination commonly takes 10–21 days with bottom heat.

Backstory

The variety circulates in specialist seed catalogs as a modern open-pollinated (sometimes listed as hybrid) ornamental, with no published pedigree for the original named plant. Indonesian breeder Agus Bangkat Widagdo released a compact DreamCatcher Dwarf selection and has used Dream Catcher as a parent in later crosses, including pairings with Farmers Market Jalapeño and Black Pearl. The name nods to the Native American dreamcatcher and to the pale, web-like variegation on the leaves. Some European vendors list it alongside Jigsaw Variegated; other U.S. farms sell the two as separate cultivars.
