About

The Chocolate Naga Pepper is a dark brown to chocolate-colored form or hybrid of the Naga Morich landrace. Pods start green and ripen to a rich chocolate-brown, typically 5–8 cm long, elongated to slightly lantern-shaped, thin-skinned and wrinkled or pimply. Heat arrives quickly or builds over minutes to an intense, endorphin-releasing burn in the 900,000–1.5 million SHU range. Flavor opens with sweet, fruity notes (quince, floral, balsamic, subtle vanilla or cocoa) before deep earthy bitterness and the signature Naga fire. Plants are productive bushy shrubs suited to warm climates and popular for extreme hot sauces, powders and bold culinary applications.

Backstory

The Chocolate Naga is a dark-brown phenotype or hybrid derived from the Naga Morich (“snake chili”), a Capsicum chinense landrace native to Bangladesh and the Naga hills of Northeast India (Nagaland, Assam, Manipur). Cultivated for generations for food, medicine and culture, the base variety gained worldwide fame in the early 2000s as one of the hottest natural chilies. Chocolate forms include natural brown selections and modern crosses such as Chocolate Ghost × Naga Morich developed by Steve Bender at Innovation Acre. It is also sold as Chocolate Naga Morich, Naga Chocolate, Big Bang Chocolate Naga, Black Naga, Fuoco Nero and Chocolate King Naga, and sits in the same breeding lineage that produced Dorset Naga, Naga Viper and contributions to other superhots.
