About

7 Pot Primo Heatless looks like one of the world's hottest peppers and eats like one of the fruitiest. Pods are 4–6 cm, heavily wrinkled and blistered, with the signature scorpion tail of Troy Primeaux's 7 Pot Primo, ripening from green to bright red. A chance mutation discovered by Mark Wilkerson dropped the heat to a tingle or zero, so the floral-citrus chinense flavor is finally edible without dilution. Plants grow like other Capsicum chinense superhots — long season, roughly 90–150 cm, full sun — and open-pollinated seed can still throw a hot off-type.

Backstory

A chance low-capsaicin mutation of the 7 Pot Primo, saved as a selection after grower Mark Wilkerson noticed a Primo plant that looked every bit like the million-SHU parent but yielded a heatless sauce. The parent pepper is Troy Primeaux's Naga Morich × Trinidad 7 Pot cross, begun at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette around 2005. Wilkerson shared pods with other growers and the sport has been kept through later generations. Seed is typically sold open-pollinated and is not fully stable, so a plant can still produce a hotter off-type.

Mark Wilkerson

Grower Mark Wilkerson found a near-heatless sport on a 7 Pot Primo after a sauce batch came out mild. Seed shops and the grower who spoke with him treat it as an open-pollinated selection of that parent; the trait is not fully stable.
