7 Pot Bubblegum

Also known as Bleeding Bubblegum · BBG7 · Bubblegum 7 Pot · 7 Pot BBG

A striking UK-bred superhot Capsicum chinense hybrid famous for its bleeding calyx trait and intense fruity heat around 925,000 SHU on average. Cross of Trinidad 7 Pot Yellow and Moruga Scorpion, it offers gnarly wrinkled pods, good productivity, and novelty appeal for hot sauce makers and collectors.

Flavor & Use

Sweet and fruity with possible citrus or light bubblegum notes for some tasters; extreme heat builds quickly and lingers, making flavor appreciation secondary to the burn.

About

The 7 Pot Bubblegum (also known as Bleeding Bubblegum or BBG7) is a visually striking superhot chili pepper created through cross-breeding. It features a distinctive 'bleeding calyx' trait where the ripe pod color seeps into the oversized calyx and sometimes the stem, resembling chewed bubblegum. Pods are gnarly and wrinkled, roughly 4-5 cm long, ripening from green to red (with pink/red bleeding on the calyx). Plants are bushy, productive for a superhot, and typically reach over 3 feet tall. Flavor is described as sweet and fruity with possible citrus or light bubblegum notes, though the extreme heat quickly dominates. A single pod can flavor multiple pots of stew or soup. It is a third-generation hybrid with some trait variability.

Backstory

Developed around 2011-2012 by UK chili breeder Jon Harper as a third-generation experimental cross between a Trinidad Yellow 7 Pot and a Red Moruga Scorpion. Selected and stabilized for its unique bleeding calyx phenotype where pod color leaches into the calyx and stem, giving the bubblegum name. Retains much of the Moruga Scorpion look with good 7 Pot heat and productivity, though some trait variability remains as an F3 hybrid.

Heritage

7 Pot Bubblegum is an F2+ of 7 Pot Yellow and Moruga Scorpion, still splitting and not yet a finished line.

Jon Harper · 2011

Chilefoundry’s 2012 write-up, after Harper sent a pod, records that he crossed Red Moruga Scorpion with Yellow 7 Pot both ways. Paul Tonkin’s 2011 review of pods from Harper names the same pair; shops still sell the line as an unstable later-generation hybrid.
