What Are Hardiness Zones and What Do They Actually Mean?
When you see hardiness zones listed on a plant in the app, it's giving you one important piece of information: how well that plant can handle winter cold where you live. Here's what those numbers actually mean and how to use them.
The basic idea
Hardiness zones are a simple system that divides areas into zones based on how cold the winters usually get. They were created to help gardeners know which plants are likely to survive winter outdoors. Instead of saying "this plant needs mild winters," the system uses numbers so you can quickly compare your local climate with what a plant can handle.
How the zone numbers work
The numbers go from low to high. Lower numbers (Zones 1–5) mean very cold winters with deep freezes. Middle numbers (Zones 6–8) mean moderate winters with freezing temperatures. Higher numbers (Zones 9–11+) mean mild winters where freezing is rare or doesn't happen at all.
The higher the number, the milder the winter. A plant rated for Zones 9–11 generally needs warmer winters than a plant rated for Zones 4–7. When you see a range like "Zones 5–9" or "Zones 9–11" on a plant, it means that plant can usually survive winter outdoors in those zones.

The numbered hardiness zones you see in this app — and most gardening apps and websites — are based on the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. This system was developed for the United States and Canada.
